Frequently Asked Questions, Page 4 of 4

16. Do you have a list available of physicians - either MD or ND - who treat with high PH therapy and maybe other methods talked about on your website? I have an MD now as well as an ND in Arizona who are treating me for lung cancer. However, neither one is doing  much and familiar enough with any of the treatments your website mentions. I have been treating myself also - using the juices and supplements and higher doses of calcium. I am holding my own but I know I need more professional guidance. If you have any names I would appreciate having them - no matter where they are -  but I do live outside the Boston, MA area.

The best we can suggest is that you go to our useful links page and look for the various organizations of doctors interested in alternative treatments. Many of these organizations list their members on their web site. You can then contact the doctors who serve your particular area and find out their interests.

Another option is to ask your doctors to read Alkalize For Health.

However, our website is primarily for self-treatment, and there is very little in our program that you need a doctor's help with. Our 8 step program is intended to be what YOU can do to complement whatever your doctor does. It fills in a big gap. Therefore, it is not really necessary to do anything more than just tell your doctor what you are doing (this is always a good idea).

On the other hand, you want to make sure that what your doctor IS doing is complementary to your 8 step program. Some ideas for what your doctor might be doing are listed on our complementary medicine page.

For lung problems we really like using a few drops of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide with water in a humidifier, and aromatherapy with essential oils. You can run the humidifier all night long. Hyperthermia, such as a sauna, readily heats up the lungs because they are directly exposed to the incoming warm air.

Since you already have a naturopath, you might ask him/her about trying potassium/sodium bicarbonate.

17. Any possible connection between acidosis and A.L.S.?

You ask if there is any possible connection between acidosis and ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

If you look at our saliva pH test page you will find in the left column a poll. It is a very simple poll and if you click on "current results", they seem quite convincing. Such a poll could easily be performed by any website dedicated to ALS, or by any physician. This would provide the short and simple answer to your question.

Dr. Carl J. Reich tested the saliva pH of his patients, and Lou Gehrig's disease is specifically mentioned in his book as having a basis in what he called the "calcium deficiency state". (See The Calcium Factor: The Scientific Secret of Health and Youth, by Robert R. Barefoot and Carl J. Reich, M.D., 1992, page 86). The "calcium deficiency state" is equivalent to the "acidosis" you ask about.

Testing and correcting this acidosis would seem a logical starting point when devising an ALS self-treatment program. However, for cancer we go beyond a simplistic "one step program" that tackles just the issue of acidosis, and propose a broader eight step program that addresses a wide variety of issues important to resolving cancer. Similarly, for ALS we would suggest that there are a variety of fronts on which the situation should be attacked simultaneously.

If you look at the possible causes of ALS, you will see several of the usual suspects explored on our cancer site: free radicals, environmental toxins, trauma/stress, and infections. If you read our cancer self treatment page you will soon understand that there is a very close relationship between acidosis and free radical damage, between environmental toxins and free radical damage, between acidosis and oxygen and infections (most infections are anaerobic), between trauma/stress and proper functioning of the nervous system. Ketogenic diet. To enhance the circulation of nutrients and oxygen to all the tissues, it is absolutely necessary to have clean arteries. Dr. Dean Ornish's effective 4 step program for clean arteries is low-fat vegetarian diet, exercise, non-smoking and meditation. We have a page devoted to the healthy heart.

So in a very simple way, we might derive an eight step self-treatment program to begin to address the problem of ALS:

1. More Oxygen
2. More Alkalinity
3. Less Free Radicals
4. More Exercise
5. Hyperthermia (to detoxify the body)
6. More Enzymes (to facilitate all metabolic activities)
7. Diet
8. Meditation

Every condition that involves free radical damage and inflammation should be helped by Earthing. Also, an unhealthy micro-biome in the gut can result in inflammation throughout the body. To create a healthy micro-biome you need prebiotics, probiotics, healthy whole foods diet, avoid antibiotics, and perhaps even get a fecal transplant.

Near the top of our meditation page there is a chart, and you will see that the incidence of diseases of the nervous system is reduced by about 87% for individuals practicing Transcendental Meditation. ALS is just one of these diseases of the nervous system that seem to be absent in the relatively stress-free nervous system produced by practice of TM. We are not suggesting that practice of TM will cure ALS, but it certainly seems to be effective in helping to prevent it. If a person already has ALS, then practice of TM may help prevent the ALS from worsening and certainly belongs in any comprehensive program to deal with ALS.

Charlotte Gerson claims that people following Gerson Therapy have success in overcoming many diseases, including ALS. Gerson Therapy focuses on detoxification of the body together with enhanced nutrition.

Eating a gluten-free diet may prevent several problems in the brain including frequent headaches and migraines, ischemic stroke, epileptic seizures, and brain matter lesions (ALS).

A ketogenic diet produces a state called ketosis in which the body uses energy from fats rather than energy from sugar. Ketosis is found to be helpful when dealing with Parkinson's Disease, ALS, traumatic brain injury, MS, epilepsy, autism, bipolar disorder, psychosis and Alzheimer's disease. 1

ALS is associated with echovirus and retrovirus infection. See this page for assistance with infections. When ALS is Lyme

Medical geographer Dr. Harold Foster found a connection between selenium and iodine deficiencies and several conditions including ALS, MS, Parkinson's disease, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

"Aluminum is a neurotoxin known to build up in the bodily tissues of persons with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)." -  Hoffer & Saul, page 245. EDTA chelation therapy can remove aluminum from the body. A less expensive option is choline stabilized orthosilicic acid, an effective chelator of heavy metals including lead, mercury, arsenic, and aluminum. Choline stabilized orthosilicic acid is the most absorbable form of dietary silica, and offers many additional health benefits including better hair, skin and nails, plus stronger bones and collagen. Choline stabilized orthosilicic acid is available in products such as Silidyn Rejuvenate, and Biosil by Natural Factors. Ongoing supplementation with choline stabilized orthosilicic acid is found to reduce aluminum in the brain, and help prevent senility and Alzheimer's disease. Less expensive (and less absorbable) sources of silica include silica gel and the herb horsetail.

Everyone should eat a little cottage cheese and flax oil daily as recommended by Dr. Johanna Budwig. Search the Internet and YouTube for more information.

Many pesticides are neurotoxins, yet the agrichemical industry has friends in high places so a scapegoat is generally found. Here is a review paper that takes a look at pesticides and Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Polio and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Mad Cow Disease may be another example. One environmental toxin that many people are increasingly exposed to is the Monsanto herbicide called "Roundup" also knows as "glyphosate". See here.

For the most part, our 8 step program for self-treatment of cancer really does not target just cancer. Treatments specific for cancer are actually pushed to a back page of the website called complementary medicine. The real focus of our 8 step program is preventing / removing disease by creating health. The program addresses the diet and lifestyle defects that are widespread in our global society and which contribute to a wide variety of diseases that manifest according to each person's particular situation. In the absence of such a comprehensive program to create health, no medical treatment can be expected to create health. In the presence of such a program to create health, competent medical treatment will have the best chance for success.

18. My cat has cancer and the vet won't operate because the tumor is pressing into the nerve and I was wondering how you get more oxygen in a cat.

Much of our 8 step program should apply to cats and other animals.

The Budwig protocol of mixing cottage cheese and flax oil apparently works for cats and dogs. See and search the Internet for more information.

A very easy thing to do is to purchase an Earthing mat for the pet's bed. In our opinion, every pet would benefit from Earthing. Earthing should increase zeta potential thereby improving circulation throughout the body.

You could put a little potassium bicarbonate in the cat's drinking water and/or food. It's time for an internal bath.

Other things you might add to the cat's drinking water include very small quantities of hydrogen peroxide and some colloidal silver.

A little cottage cheese and flax oil blended together and mixed into your cat's food each day may be helpful. You could also grind up a few apricot seeds and mix them in. Perhaps a vitamin C tablet also. There are lots of things you could mix into the cat's food. You might also investigate the various alternative treatments listed on our complementary medicine page. Beta 1,3/1,6 glucan, for example, has been used successfully on fish, animals and people for a variety of problems. The herbal remedies popularized by Harry Hoxsey originated from observations of what horses with cancer were eating in order to cure themselves.

Cats enjoy the warmth of sunlight. Perhaps they would enjoy a sauna or other heat treatment as described on our hyperthermia page? You and your cat might enjoy a sauna together.

"I think the life of my old dog Coca, who had bone cancer, was much prolonged by a variety of herbal remedies, including the immunity-boosting maitake and reishi mushrooms. The vet was very surprised that she lived as long as she did." -

There are veterinarians interested in alternative medicine for animals. Here are some organizations

Vitacel 7 / Ultra H-3

Vitacel 7 and Ultra H-3 are virtually identical products sold by different distributors. Vitacel 7 is less expensive, so this is the one we use.

These products trace their roots back to Dr. Ana Aslan who in the 1950's was looking for a way to ease the discomfort of senior citizens in her care. Much to her surprise, not only did they feel better, but a wide variety of health problems began to clear up. Improvements in skin, hair, and nails attracted many movie stars and famous people to Dr. Aslan.

In the 1970's Dr. Robert Koch began 25 years of research to improve on Dr. Aslan's discovery. Patented formulas such as Vitacel 7 and Ultra H-3 are the direct result of his efforts.

We highly recommend these products for all seniors. There are also versions for your senior pets.

Experiments with animals suggest a 20% increase in longevity is possible. However, it is the improvements in health that really catch our attention. Read the many online testimonials by seniors and senior pet owners.

19. I have been diagnosed with skin lupus. If you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

"Over fifty years ago, lupus vulgaris (tuberculosis of the skin) was reported successfully treated with 150,000 IU of vitamin D daily for six to eight months." - Hoffer & Saul, page 139. Vitamin D2 in large doses can cause side effects such as hypercalcemia, but D3 taken in large doses seems to be free of side effects. Orthomolecular physicians have given therapeutic daily doses of 50,000 to 300,000 IU of vitamin D3 without harmful side effects. - Hoffer & Saul, page 140. Vitamin D is antiviral and antibacterial.

The particular bacteria that causes lupus vulgaris is called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and mycobacteria in general can be killed by the application and/or consumption of iodine. Iodine is antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal.

If you search the Internet for "tuberculosis vitamin C" you will find that "We've discovered that vitamin C kills Mycobacterium tuberculosis cells, and in fact it works not only on the multidrug-resistant strains, but the totally drug-resistant strains as well." - Dr. William Jacobs See also 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

There is another form of lupus called cutaneous lupus erythematosus which is a group of similar skin disorders and is considered to be an autoimmune disease. Here we see lupus erythematisus described as a symptom of hypothyroidism, for which the consumption of iodine may be helpful.

On each page of our web site at the bottom there is a search box.  You might do a site search for "lupus" as the subject keeps coming up.

Basically, lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease. We suggest you make a list of all possible causes of inflammation and deal with each one in turn. Taking vitamins C and D plus iodine seems a good place to start, in order to help deal with an underlying infection or deficiency in these nutrients.

Every condition that involves inflammation should be helped by Earthing. The literature on Earthing specifically mentions autoimmune diseases such as lupus.

Glyconutrients are popular for autoimmune diseases. See

20. Do you have any thoughts on Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

"Multiple Sclerosis" means "multiple scars". The scars are in the brain. Each nerve in your body is covered by a "myelin" sheath, much like insulation on an electrical wire. In Multiple Sclerosis, this sheath degenerates and is replaced by scar tissue. Without the sheath, the nerve cannot function. According to official medicine, the cause of MS is unknown. There is no cure. Drugs are available to treat the symptoms, but these drugs have side effects...

Dr. Arthur Coca and his associates reportedly cured many afflictions, including 14 out of 15 MS patients, by using a pulse test to diagnose allergies to foods and other substances, and then having the patients adjust their diet and lifestyle appropriately - by simply avoiding the cause. Basically, you measure your pulse (beats per minute) before you get out of bed and write it down, before you eat a meal consisting of one food and write it down, 30 minutes after eating and write it down, and 60 minutes after the meal and write it down. That is a completed test for one food. After the 60 minute test you can eat another single food meal and take your pulse at 30 minutes and 60 minutes writing it down each time. Repeat through the day. "The injurious foods are recognized by the abnormal speed-up of the pulse." Children can learn how to do this when they are old enough. Everyone might benefit from learning the pulse test.

According to Ken Stoller MD, there is extensive medical literature showing that the scars in the brain are caused by viruses such as Epstein Barr Virus and Varacella Virus or HHV-6. Dr. Stoller is highly critical of the practice of naming a disease after its symptoms rather than after the cause. Therefore, he would rename Multiple Sclerosis as "chronic viral encephalitis" and he treats MS with generic antiviral agents such as Valacyclovir. Our approach to viral infections is described here.

If you do a search of the Alkalize For Health web site using the Google search box at the bottom of each page, you will find 28 references to Multiple Sclerosis. It just keeps popping up when we consider factors related to cancer. These include:

- lack of vitamins D and K2
- exposure to cow's milk protein during infancy
- mycotoxins
- lack of essential fatty acids (EFA)
- infection
- aspartame
- aluminum and mercury (both are neurotoxins) from vaccines and other sources
- silicone gel breast implants
- chronic dehydration

Factors mentioned that may help with MS include:

- glyconutrients
- lecithin
- vitamin b12
- essential fatty acids (flax oil)
- virgin coconut oil
- enzymes
- hyperbaric oxygen treatment
- hydrogen peroxide
- organic germanium
- electromedicine

The literature on Earthing specifically mentions MS.

Exposure to Dirty Electricity (1, 2) may influence MS and many other health problems.

Women have a greater tendency to essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency due to EFAs being taken up by the fetus during pregnancy. Two to three times as many women get MS as men.

Maps of disease distribution and mortality at clearly show that, as a general rule, the death rates for breast, colon and ovarian cancer, as well as incidence rates for multiple sclerosis, decrease as one moves south. Dr. William B. Grant, founder of SUNARC, has published a paper in the journal Cancer, in which he argues that these differences are due to sunlight and vitamin D. Here is an interesting video that implicates a shortage of vitamin D and an abundance of viruses. Several of our pages (1, 2, 3) discuss many ways to remove viruses and other infections.

Here is a book on how MS is being treated successfully with high doses of vitamin D.

The thyroid gland governs brain development including myelination. Anything that inhibits the functioning of this gland and creates hypothyroidism may contribute to demyelination. Dr. Ray Peat suggests that unsaturated fats (corn oil, safflower oil, canola oil, etc.) create hypothyroidism and saturated fats such as virgin coconut oil support the thyroid and restore normal functioning. Iodine may also help. Lugol's iodine, a mix of iodine and potassium iodide, should be available at your local drugstore. Your body needs both types of iodine. Iodoral is Lugol's iodine in tablet form. Here is an article highlighting the connection between MS and magnesium, selenium, iodine and mercury.

Niacinamide (B3) "profoundly prevents the degeneration of demyelinated axons and improves the behavioral deficits" in animals. "For any brain injury, one should try niacin and ascorbic acid as a basic program, combined with the orthomolecular diet." - Hoffer & Saul, page 245. The standard dose recommended by Dr. Hoffer for brain damage seems to be 1 gram of niacin and 1 gram of ascorbic acid three times daily with meals.

Based on the above factors:

  8 Step Cancer Program

 Impact on Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

1.More oxygenOxygen facilitates all metabolic activities, and tends to have an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal effect.
2.More alkalinityAlkaline minerals bring mental and physical relaxation. Alkaline body fluids bring increased oxygen to the tissues.
3.Less free radicalsToxic chemicals that create free radicals are an irritant in the system. Antioxidants such as MAK, Earthing and various nutrients help to neutralize free radicals.
4.More exerciseImproved circulation of the lymph resulting in nourishment and purification of the body tissues. Increased heart & lung capacity and physiological efficiency.
5.HyperthermiaToxic chemicals have been implicated in MS. Hyperthermia helps to remove toxic chemicals from the body, thereby reducing free radicals. Improved circulation. However, people with MS tend to be sensitive to heat.
6.More enzymesEnzymes facilitate digestion and all metabolic activities. Enzymes can dissolve scar tissue. Iodine and vitamin E can also help with scar tissue.
7.Nutrient-dense diet, B17, F, C,
D, selenium & iodine
Relief from many "hidden hungers" that cause agitation and discomfort at the cellular level. Less demand on the body's store of enzymes. Increased calmness. Vitamin F promotes increased oxygen to all areas of the body.
8.Transcendental MeditationRelease of stress resulting in calmness of mind, body and emotions, together with increased attention span. 87% reduction in diseases of the nervous system.

Like cancer, MS involves many different factors, some of which may be more important than others for different people with MS. All of the above adds up to the beginning of an approach to preventing and relieving MS. When you research the different components on the Internet, each has claims that people with MS have been helped. Adding them together creates a more complete self-help program.

The healing of Heather Garden.

Dr. David Perlmutter talks of an MS patient who went to England for a fecal transplant and who experienced dramatic improvement in his ability to walk. A fecal transplant helps restore a healthy micro-biome in the gut, and a healthy gut directly affects the nervous system.

Also, there is a possibility that MS may be caused by damaged veins. Veins that are narrowed, blocked, or twisted may cause blood to back up and search for another route to the heart. When these veins happen to be in the neck, the blood backs up into the skull, and may have an unfortunate impact on the central nervous system. When the blockage in the veins is corrected surgically, some MS patients have gained significant relief from symptoms.

Nerves and veins can be twisted and turned by undue pressure of experience or overload. Veins can be damaged by excess iron in the blood (Avoid iron filings in breakfast cereal and other "enriched" foods). Veins contain many one-way valves which can be damaged by clothing that is too tight, causing the blood to pool. Veins can be damaged by blood clots. Scar tissue can narrow or block veins. Veins can be damaged by injections or surgery.

Surgery and stents do not necessarily offer a permanent solution to blocked veins. Our healthy heart program to strengthen arteries should also apply to veins. Proper diet should strengthen both arteries and veins. Gentle stretching during yoga asanas should help. Regular exercise is needed to circulate the lymph to all areas of the body, including the veins. The deep rest experienced during Transcendental Meditation will help dissolve stress and damage in the physiology.

Besides MS, many other conditions may have damaged veins as a contributing factor. One final comment here, allergies can cause a fluid build-up with resulting increased pressure and impaired circulation in a localized area. This is discussed by Dr. Coca in his paper regarding the pulse test for allergens.

There is a special highly absorbable form of curcumin called CurcuGenix that is found to be effective for pain. Even people with advanced MS have been helped.

What Really Causes Multiple Sclerosis
by Harold D. Foster

Medical geographer Dr. Harold Foster has written an interesting and useful book on the subject of Multiple Sclerosis which can be downloaded free from this webpage Dr. Foster found the following:
- Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy and Type 1 Diabetes have similar geographical distribution
- the influence of geography is more significant than either genetics or infection
- the interplay between the environment and genetics is called "epigenetics" and here lies the cause of chronic diseases
- sunlight has a protective effect. About 3/4 of regional variations of MS can be explained by latitude
- iodine has a protective effect, particularly during gestation and childhood
- allergy to cow's milk plays a causal role. So does sensitivity to gluten.

Dr. Foster writes that once established, MS is characterized by chronic inflammation and requires an anti-inflammatory diet. The anti-inflammatory diet consists of whole foods, balanced omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, is low on the glycemic index, and high in antioxidants. This is the diet we have been promoting throughout this website.

Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory and slows the progression of MS. Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory. Cow milk and gluten are common allergens that can trigger inflammation and should be avoided. Asiatic populations have little MS. They tend to not consume dairy products and eat rice rather than wheat. Any sensitivity that triggers inflammation should be avoided.

The cells that produce myelin are called oligodendrocytes. These cells are highly vulnerable to oxidative stress are destroyed early in the process that leads to MS.

Dietary supplementation with cod liver oil, vitamin D, calcium and magnesium may be helpful. Also helpful are vitamins C and E, all the B vitamins, and coenzyme Q10. Production of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase requires consumption of selenium and three amino acids (glutamine, tryptophan and cysteine).

Some people benefit from certain supplements and other people benefit from a different approach. It becomes a question of trial and error for each person to find out what provides the best benefit. However, reading what helped other people gives you an idea of what you might try. As always, prevention is the best option.

Vitamin D3 Sulfate

When the skin receives UVB sunlight, vitamin D3 is produced. However, many other variations of vitamin D are also produced which are as yet poorly understood. However, vitamin D3 is fat soluble and there is information that a water soluble form of vitamin D is also produced by the skin.

"When exposed to sunshine, your skin also synthesizes vitamin D3 sulfate. This form of vitamin D is water soluble, unlike oral vitamin D3 supplements, which is unsulfated. The water-soluble form can travel freely in your bloodstream, whereas the unsulfated form needs LDL (the so-called "bad" cholesterol) as a vehicle of transport. According to Dr. Stephanie Seneff, there's reason to believe that many of the profound benefits of vitamin D are actually due to the vitamin D sulfate. As a result, she suspects that the oral non-sulfated form of vitamin D might not provide all of the same benefits, because it cannot be converted to vitamin D sulfate" -

In the talk with Dr. Staphanie Seneff on this page she makes the point that it is the water soluble form of vitamin D that is involved with MS.

This suggests that people with MS need a sunlamp. Plus, they need to ensure that they get enough sulfur in their diet, such as by eating and juicing cruciferous vegetables.

21. This is a request for any info regarding assistance with serious schizophrenia with the alkalize approach... I have not been able to find much.

Dr. Carson E. Pierce wrote, "The first thought of any doctor who treats any kind of disease should be, what is the pH of this patient?"

It is easy to check the saliva pH of the patient. However, if there is no "info regarding assistance with serious schizophrenia with the alkalize approach" why would one want to?

The medical profession generally attempts to treat a disease without changing the diet and lifestyle of the patient. Therefore, any treatments given are specific to the disease. If there is no information in medical literature regarding the use of a treatment for a particular disease, then how can a treatment be justified?

Our perspective is the complete opposite. We are dealing with disease and health from the perspective of the patient helping himself or herself, and the tools at hand are diet and lifestyle. Furthermore, our approach is not so much to treat disease as to create health. We feel that if health is created, then disease will not be found, and that it is unrealistic to expect health without having a healthy diet and lifestyle. Plus, if health is being created, then it is more likely that the treatments provided by the doctor will succeed. In this manner the two approaches should be complementary.

The strength and simplicity of our approach is that if something such as alkalinity can be shown to be helpful in the cause of creating health, then we do not need to concern ourselves with the availability of literature regarding alkalinity and any particular disease (there are so many). This is why Dr. Pierce could write, "The first thought of any doctor who treats any kind of disease should be, what is the pH of this patient?" Dr. Pierce was concerning himself first with the health of the patient.

On every page of our web site is the quote from Thomas Edison, "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease." Such is the power of our approach, that it can prevent disease and make treatments unnecessary or less necessary. We salute Dr. Pierce as being worthy of Thomas Edison's description of the "doctor of the future".

In this manner we have created an 8 step program for self-treatment of cancer that is in actuality an 8 step program for creating health that can be applied with subtle modifications to the situation virtually anyone finds himself or herself in.
Here are the 8 steps:

1. More oxygen
2. More alkalinity
3. Less free radicals
4. More exercise
5. Hyperthermia
6. More enzymes
7. Nutrient dense diet
8. Transcendental Meditation

The brain requires a massive amount of oxygen to function well. Oxygen and alkalinity go together, as we explain on our website. Free radicals damage the brain, indicating the need for anti-oxidants and Earthing, plus removal of toxic chemicals that are the source of free radical damage. Exercise is required to circulate the lymph to nourish and purify all tissues, including the brain. Hyperthermia is effective to remove toxic chemicals and heavy metals from the body. Enzymes facilitate all transformations in the body. Nutrient dense diet (including the often overlooked essential fatty acids, glyconutrients, and trace minerals) provides the basic nutritional requirements. Transcendental Meditation dissolves stress, and stress may be involved in perhaps 80% of all disease.

With this as a foundational program for health, what can be added for schizophrenia?

We did a search of our website using the Google search box at the bottom of each page. There are seven references to schizophrenia:
1. an allergic response to homogenized milk

2. deficiency of an essential fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
3. lack of vitamin D in the mother during pregnancy
4. possible involvement of bacterial, viral or fungal infection
5. diet, stress and maternal nutrition
6. benefit from consuming the omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids in proper balance
7. benefit from nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Point number 1 indicates the need for an elimination diet or pulse test to isolate possible allergens.
Point numbers 2 and 6 emphasize the need for essential fatty acids in proper balance.
Point numbers 3 and 5 emphasize the importance of maternal nutrition (often neglected in our primitive society).
Point number 4 regarding possible infections is addressed at length on several pages of our website including the following:
Point number 5 adds the need for stress reduction
Point number 7 sums up the importance of diet and lifestyle in dealing with schizophrenia.

You can see that our approach is one of developing a program to tackle a problem from every possible angle.

Broadening our search to include other sources besides our own website, we find:

1. "In states of vitamin C deficiency, such as in the average cancer patient, no vitamin C will be detectable in the urine. In contrast, healthy individuals maintaining a reasonable dietary intake should show some measurable urinary vitamin C concentration...Chronic schizophrenics may have to ingest as much as 25 g or even 100 g in a day before an appreciable amount appears in the urine..." on page 122 of the book Cancer and Vitamin C by Drs. Ewan Cameron and Linus Pauling. This suggests that extra vitamin C may be useful.

2. The book Prescription for Nutritional Healing by James and Phyllis Balch lists the following as possible causes of schizophrenia:

- heredity
- complications during birth
- childhood head injuries
- reaction to a virus
- environmental poisons that have reached the brain
- celiac disease and gluten intolerance
- pellagra and vitamin B3 deficiency
- high copper levels in the tissues
- food allergies (many patients improve after a fast)
- drugs can cause the symptoms of schizophrenia

Such a list provides many options to try. Indeed, the Balchs state that "treatment proceeds by trial and error, using the dominant symptoms as a guide."

3. An internet search for "hoffer schizophrenia" produced several interesting results including Back in the 1950's Dr. Hoffer noticed the similarity between the symptoms of schizophrenia and pellagra (caused by vitamin B3 deficiency). He researched this extensively and found that he could cure about 80% of schizophrenic patients with 3,000 mg of vitamin B3 daily.

Dr. Hoffer's experiences applying orthomolecular therapy deserve respect. Dr. Hoffer prescribes niacin/niacinamide (vitamin B3), piridoxine (vitamin B6), vitamin C, zinc gluconate or zinc citrate, plus drugs as required. Here is some information regarding psychiatric/behavioral problems and niacin/niacinamide.

There are eleven B vitamins. Since a deficiency in one B vitamin often indicates a deficiency in the others, and since the B vitamins work synergistically, it may be healthiest to take all the B vitamins together in a B-complex supplement.

4. Here is an interesting table indicating that autism, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's are remarkably similar. This suggests that when looking for the answer to any of these, one might benefit by looking at what helps any of the others. In this regard, the work of Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride on the impact of toxic gut flora that we discuss briefly here may be helpful. Autism, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's are all associated with infection. See this page for assistance with infections.

5. DMSO has reportedly been used for many mental disorders including acute and chronic schizophrenia with good results. There has been extensive published research on DMSO, but being inexpensive and unpatentable there is no incentive for pharmaceutical companies to promote it.

6. We note that among people who practice Transcendental Meditation, hospitalizations for diseases of the nervous system are reduced 87%.

7. Dr. Harold Foster wrote a wonderful book on "What Really Causes Schizophrenia" available for free download from his website. He provides the most comprehensive and insightful analysis we have seen, and then ties it all together into a unified view.

What Really Causes Schizophrenia
by Harold D. Foster

Medical geographer Dr. Harold Foster has written an interesting and useful book on the subject of schizophrenia which can be downloaded free from this webpage Dr. Foster found the following:

 - approximately one percent of the population has schizophrenia and the number has been increasing steadily for the past several hundred years along with industrialization;
- some individuals have a genetic pre-disposition to schizophrenia. There are four genetic variants associated with schizophrenia, but these are not sufficient for development of the disease;
- exposure to radiation damages the thyroid gland, and a malfunctioning thyroid gland plays a role in schizophrenia. Iodine has a protective effect, even before birth. Desiccated thyroid is the most successful treatment. Supplemental thyroid hormones can be helpful for chronic schizophrenics. Oxidative stress damages the thyroid. All schizophrenics have a malfunctioning thyroid gland;
- schizophrenics are deficient in niacin (also called niacinamide, nicotinic acid or nicotinamide). Methyl acceptors (like niacinamide and niacin) reduce the conversion rate of noradrenaline to adrenaline and its metabolite adrenochrome. This is good because adrenochrome is destructive to the physiology. Adenochrome creates free radicals and oxidative stress, leading to depletion of glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase. Adenochrome is a neurotoxin;
- schizophrenics need extra vitamin B6 and zinc;
- schizophrenics have brain atrophy and enlarged brain ventricles caused by an ineffective/exhausted antioxidant defense system (glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase);
- schizophrenics benefit from n-3 essential fatty acid supplementation;
- low tryptophan diets aggravate the symptoms of schizophrenia. Tryptophan and niacin are needed for the formation of serotonin in the body. Serotonin is an antioxidant. Serotonin deficiency leads to problems such as schizophrenia;
- many schizophrenics have abnormal levels (too high or too low) of histamine and copper. These schizophrenics had been smokers or exposed to second hand smoke;
- glutamate imbalance may cause hallucinations;
- metabolism of homocysteine requires vitamins B6, B12 and folate. Deficiencies in these nutrients leads to a build up of homocysteine. Oxidized homocysteine (homocysteic acid) has an excitatory effect. Many schizophrenics have elevated homocysteine;

- consumption of wheat and milk correlate with increased incidence of schizophrenia. Many schizophrenics test positive for celiac disease (allergy to gluten in wheat). Some schizophrenics improve on a gluten-free diet. Controlled fasting followed by testing single foods helps identify allergens. Many schizophrenics improve while fasting and remain well on simple diets;
- schizophrenia is inversely correlated with sunlight (vitamin D), and soil concentration of selenium and calcium. Selenium is necessary for the production of the thyroid hormone triiodothronine;
- schizophrenia is positively correlated with highly polluted urban areas, including noise pollution;
- maternal herpes infection increases the odds of the child later developing schizophrenia or other psychotic illness. Schizophrenics tend to have had a difficult birth and low birth weight;
- the birth of future schizophrenics is 6 to 10% more likely to be during the colder months of the year (January, February and March in the Northern Hemisphere);
- there is a strong geographical association between schizophrenia prevalence and the distribution of the Ixodid tick that is responsible for the spread of Lyme disease;
- hyperthermia, fever from malaria provide a temporary reprieve from the symptoms of schizophrenia;
- stress, allergic reactions, over-consumption of sugar and lack of exercise can trigger schizophrenia. These increase adrenaline which oxidizes to adrenochrome and then interferes with the functioning of the thyroid gland;
- schizophrenia becomes chronic when damage to the thyroid gland becomes permanent;
- Dr. Foster offers an eight step treatment program for schizophrenia;
- schizophrenia is not all bad, because there is a close link between psychosis and  brilliance. Also religious sense, technical and artistic creativity, and leadership. Plus, there may be a reduced risk for some forms of cancer.

The mention of wheat and gluten above raise the issue of intestinal health and the micro-biome. An unhealthy intestine and micro-biome can impact the health of the brain and nervous system.

So this is our long answer to your short question. We could have simply replied that like you, we have little info regarding schizophrenia and alkalinity. However, that would not have accomplished much. Hopefully, something in what we have written may be of use to you.

22. I own a fitness club. Do you have any suggestions?

We would suggest that a total fitness club should broaden its perspective. Here is what we would recommend:

1. Most fitness clubs have treadmills and stationary bicycles. Why not connect them to an oxygen bar and offer EWOT (Exercise With Oxygen Therapy)? EWOT for at least 15 minutes once a month floods the body with oxygen helping to prevent disease and promote health. "Oxygenate Your Body!"

2. Many fitness clubs offer a sauna. These saunas are generally too hot, so people either do not use them or stay in them for a very short time. It would be good for everyone to regularly (once a week) enjoy a 45 - 90 minute sauna at 108F / 42C, as this is the most economical and effective way to remove many toxic substances from the body. "Detoxify Your Body!"

3. It would be good to offer a juice bar. In addition to fresh juices, the juice bar can offer good quality powdered green drinks for people to take home. "Alkalize Your Body!"

4. The juice bar might also offer nutritional supplements designed to clean the arteries and prevent cancer. "Nourish Your Body!"

5. Regular exercise promotes the flow of lymph, which is useful to help maintain the health of the arteries. "Exercise Your Body!" Yoga asanas increase the flexibility of the body.

6. You might consider adding a meditation room to your club. Transcendental Meditation gives the body a very deep level of rest. "Rest Your Body!"

7. Why not install a squat toilet in your washroom? Added to a row of regular toilets, it will give your members an opportunity to give it a try.

This fitness program offers a wholistic approach to total health.

23. I was diagnosed with Scleroderma about 3 years ago. I refused to go on any drugs and chose to drastically change my diet. I have done well and my doctor is impressed. However, my Reynauds disease continues to bother me. I get cold very easily. Can you suggest anything to help?

Raynaud's disease and Scleroderma go together. Many people have both.

Stress aggravates Raynaud's disease. The nervous system is largely responsible for where blood flows. Transcendental Meditation (TM) dissolves stress and balances the nervous system. Peripheral blood flow increases significantly with practice of TM.

Good blood flow is important to cancer prevention, so we have an entire page devoted to healthy heart and circulation.

Regular exercise is necessary for good circulation. The herb ginkgo biloba may also aid circulation.

Hyperthermia causes excessive sweating, which cleanses the skin. Read our hyperthermia page. If toxic chemicals are part of the problem, then excessive sweating is a good way to remove these chemicals from the body.

Sunlight in moderation is good for the skin. Whenever a health condition such as Raynaud's is more prevalent in northern latitudes, then lack of sunlight and vitamin D may be assumed to be part of the problem. A lifetime of inadequate vitamin D may lead to a deficiency that needs megadoses of vitamin D to overcome. Have a look at our reply regarding lupus (question #20) above.

DMSO may help Scleroderma and Reynaud's Disease. 1, 2, 3, 4

Also, whenever a problem affects women more than men then this offers a clue to what might help. Scleroderma is four times more likely to occur in women than men. Women also get Raynaud's more often. You do not mention if you have children, but deficiencies in minerals such as magnesium are common in women after childbirth. Magnesium helps relax the body, which may benefit the spasms affecting your circulatory system. Please see the box regarding magnesium halfway down this page.

As a rule, skin problems are more than skin deep. We suggest that you need to focus on your entire health. Our eight step cancer prevention program has overall health as its goal. If you can improve your overall health, then the health of all aspects of your body should improve. Like pulling one leg of a table, the other legs just follow along.

An Ayurvedic Vaidya (doctor) compared cancer to descending a river toward a waterfall. Those who are alert hear the waterfall long before it is dangerous and go to the shore. Others notice it when the sound has become rather loud and the water is flowing more rapidly. However, there is still time to go to the shore but with difficulty. Finally, you have those who wake up when they are too close to the waterfall and they cannot escape.

A genuine war on cancer will begin with a public education program letting people know what they can do to prevent cancer. This web site contains the information that we would provide in such a public education program. There may be ways to improve the program and we are open to suggestions.

Please send us your questions and suggestions, and if we have anything useful to say we will post your questions and the answers on this page. Our email address is
