Flu season is fast approaching. The "authorities" would have everyone lining up for a flu shot even though the vaccine is literally a crapshoot. Experts guess in advance which viral strain will be making its worldly rounds and if they guess wrong, there may be no protection at all from the vaccine. Furthermore, you are never warned about the significant dangers of all the preservatives and/or heavy metals in the vaccine. Big drug company profits hinge on selling the patented pharmaceutical vaccines. But you don't hear anything about all of the published data showing adverse reactions to the vaccine. Many people who get the shot become ill. You're also never told that the vaccine may not work at all if you have sub-optimal nutrition. If, due to your inadequate nutritional status, you do not mount an ideal antibody response the the vaccine, what is the point? Why risk the shot? This could explain why so many vaccinated people develop the disease anyway. Are there legitimate ways to naturally boost your resistance to the influenza virus? Sure there are, but you'll never hear about them, because no drug company stands to profit by letting you find out about them. But in the case of influenza, they may very well save your life! Published in FASEB Journal in June 2001 is a landmark article on the impact of the trace mineral selenium on the influenza virus. Researchers divided mice into two groups, one well fed and nourished with ample selenium and a control group made selenium deficient. They made a startling finding, which they said has implications for humans, as the same effect is likely to occur in us. Not only were the malnourished mice sicker than the controls, but the mild virus (influenza A Bangkok) to which they were exposed mutated to more virulent (dangerous) forms. And worse, this action may contribute to new outbreaks of not just flu but many viral diseases, from the common cold to AIDS and Ebola. A key researcher reported that once the mutations have occurred, even nutritionally sound animals became susceptible to the newly mutant strain. While the study focused on influenza, which leads to over 100,000 hospitalizations each year in the U.S. alone, it also studied the mutation of Cocksakie B3, linked to a heart disease called Keshan disease. Areas of China have soils very poor in selenium. Not only have those areas been at great risk for rapid premature aging and degenerative diseases due to this deficiency, but they were also at risk for heart infection. Supplements have largely eradicated the disease, according to researchers. The Archives of Internal Medicine (April 12, 1999) reported on the impact of trace elements on immunity and infections in elderly patients. Their objective was to determine the effects of supplementation with zinc and selenium (trace minerals) compared to a second experimental group supplemented with beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E (all vitamins), and a third control group receiving only a placebo. The study found that after nutritional deficiencies were corrected (taking six months) the mineral supplemented group not only had fewer viral infections compared to BOTH other groups, but also had a higher antibody response to influenza vaccine when administered. But influenza is not the only viral infection you have to worry about this time of year. The common cold is caused by a virus, too. And here, vitamin C plays a big role in reducing the severity of symptoms. Guess what? It works for the flu, too. A number of studies involving subjects under heavy acute physical stress, show that vitamin C decreases common cold incidences by half. At least three controlled studies have shown an 80 percent reduction in the incidence of pneumonia among vitamin C users. In one large study of 700 students, vitamin C at an initial dose of 1,000 mg per hour for the first six hours followed by 3,000 mg each day thereafter, reduced cold and flu symptoms by 85 percent. Folks, these reports reveal some explosive information. First, it appears that all of us are placed at risk due to the poor nutritional status of our neighbors and society at large. The poor nutritional status of individuals and populations appears to contribute to increasing virulence and spread of viruses, contributing to epidemics. Unfortunately, we do not hear public health and government authorities educating us about this monumental information. Large scale immune risks that can be corrected safely and inexpensively with non-patentable nutritional supplements do not seem to be newsworthy. Your government and medical community would rather push vaccinations on people, when the simple truth is their immune response may be inadequate due to improper nutrition. Selenium is an absolutely mandatory participant in the most important glutathione pathway of metabolism, perhaps the body's greatest detoxifier, antioxidant, and booster of immune response. In fact, AIDS victims are found very deficient in glutathione and when levels are raised, their symptoms recede or can be prevented. It is found in meat, grains such as wheat and rice, but my favorite source of readily bioavailable selenium is nutritional yeast. I sprinkle an abundant amount of this very nutritionally rich food on my salad every night. You can find it at most grocery stores. Selenium is such a valuable mineral, I personally believe everyone should take a small supplement of it. Excellent studies have shown enormous protection and prevention of various cancers including prostate cancer in men. While too much selenium can be toxic, I have never seen 200 mcg daily of selomethionine cause any problems. Zinc (up to 30 mg daily) is another required mineral for proper immune function. In fact, years ago, a University of California Davis study demonstrated that making rats deficient in zinc led to an immune deficiency in the offspring, which persisted for four generations even when the zinc was replenished in the offspring! Thus, not only do we likely place our friends at risk of promoting epidemics by maintaining poor nutritional status, we may very well be creating lifelong immune problems for our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren because we failed to take care of ourselves. Instead of pushing mass vaccination on the population with its many unknown risks, it makes much more sense to educate and inform people of the many basic common sense steps they can take to actually improve immune function. The rationale for mass vaccination is herd immunity, that is, if enough people become immune through vaccination, the disease will have a much less chance of propagating. I wonder why immunity to most every infectious disease that could be attained through nutritional supplementation isn't promoted (hint: $$)? Action to take: Whenever you can, shop organic to maximize the nutritional value of your meals. Eat a wide array of deeply colored fruits and vegetables every day. Shoot for five to nine half-cup servings a day of various fruits and veggies. Cut out the added sugar in your diet, sugar weakens your resistance to viruses and bacteria. Because the diet is never perfect I take supplements every day. I suggest you take a good multi-vitamin mineral that provides at least 500 mg of vitamin C and 50 to 75 mg of all the B vitamins, 10,000 units of beta carotene and 5,000 to 10,000 units of vitamin A. Be sure it provides 200 mcg selenium and 15-30 mg zinc. If your multi does not provide vitamin A, take a teaspoon of cod liver oil every day. Add an extra gram or two of vitamin C each day to help you avoid infection. If you do find yourself feeling a bid under the weather, rest, get plenty of fluids, and take an extra 3,000 mg of vitamin C the first day. Get all the flu shots you like (if only they had them); if your immune system isn't prepared, you'll still be vulnerable to the flu. But what if you take every step necessary to strengthen your immune system, and then still come down with a nasty bug? Fortunately, some of the treatments that can help you stay well can also help you bounce back when you're laid low. During this season that puts us in contact with so many people while socializing or shopping, it's inevitable that many are going to come down with the flu or one of those other viruses that cause colds and digestive "bugs" that are so easily passed around. With that in mind, I called on HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., to ask him about three natural antibiotics that he told us about in the e-Alert "Be Afraid... Be Very Afraid - Part II" (10/17/02). I wondered if these three natural agents (vitamin C, grapefruit seed extract, and olive leaf extract) might also help provide protection against the flu or be useful as treatments once the flu has set in. His response: "In my opinion, absolutely! Since I don't take the flu shot myself, these are my main armamentarium." When I asked about recommended dosages for anyone who feels like they may be coming down with something, Dr. Spreen told me that at the fist sign of aches, sore throat, cough or any other symptoms of flu (or cold, or other infections), he starts with a "hit" of several thousand milligrams of vitamin C, and then follows that with 1000 mg (one gram) every hour until symptoms recede. Sometimes the vitamin C alone will do the trick, but when more is needed, olive leaf extract (OLE) and/or grapefruit seed extract (GSE) may be added or used alone. Dr. Spreen explained, "OLE is the simplest to work with, as its concentration is not a problem. 500-1000 milligrams every few hours is what I do, with or without the C, depending on the situation (I'm usually a 'shotgunner' when getting well fast is an issue). Normally, for straight oral use, the C and OLE are a great pair by themselves (the OLE lowers the needed amount of vitamin C, which can get into very high amounts for a serious flu attack)." As for grapefruit seed extract, Dr. Spreen recommends taking it in capsule form, using the suggested dosage on the label. He adds, "The full-strength liquid GSE is bitter beyond comprehension, and must be diluted. The advantage of GSE is that there are different forms available, such as throat spray, ear drops, topical, etc. Bio/chem Research in California, has done extensive research on the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties of this amazing substance." I asked Dr. Spreen if he would add any other natural therapies to what he calls "my big three," and he said there is one, but it's not a preventive agent against the flu. He said, "I'd add some acidophilus culture (also called probiotics) to the mix, during and for a few days after the use of OLE. The situation here is that OLE is such a good antibacterial that it can also kill the 'good guy' bacteria that we need in our gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. A capsule or so of acidophilus before meals should be adequate insurance for keeping these beneficial organisms established." And apparently another natural agent that helps with digestion just might help fight the flu as well. Flu Shots Can Be Dangerous To Your Health Every year about this time doctors around the world are recommending that people go in and get their annual flu shot. What most people don’t know or understand is just how dangerous this could be, especially for children under the age of 12. When people call and say “My doctor is telling the family to go in and get a flu shot. Should I do it?”…I tell them they should learn about the side effects and decide for themselves…as a chiropractor and naturopathic physician I don’t’ have the time or energy to argue with family practitioners or family doctors who are obviously uneducated on the possible side effects or detrimental effects flu shots or vaccinations in general can have on the body. I personally have never received a flu shot and have never been ill during the flu season. In my personal opinion I don’t think toxic chemicals and strains of different viruses growing on living tissue belong inside the body. Because of the demand, I want to share with you some of the research that we have found in the latest flu shot trend and the by-products of these supposedly sterile and non-harmful solutions. Phenol: Phenol is most commonly used as a disinfectant, also used as a dye, is listened as a carcinogenic agent (cancer-causing) agent and is also known as carbolic acid. Neomycin and Streptomycin: These compounds are used as antibiotics which have side effects to include severe allergic reactions in some people. It always puzzled me why they are putting two different forms of antibiotics in a viral vaccine. Aluminum: Aluminum accumulates in the skin, bones, brain and kidneys and can cause Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Aluminum has also caused cancer in laboratory mice. It is commonly used as an additive in most vaccinations. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is used as a preservative. It is also classified as a carcinogenic (cancer-causing agent) and causes the body fluids to become acidic in nature. Formaldehyde will start to preserve your tissues within the body. I hope that when your doctor starts telling you that it is time for your annual flu vaccine you will present this material to him and ask him how all of these ingredients are going to prevent you from getting the flu. I’ll be very interested in knowing what his answer is to that question. As a side note just to let you know what is being injected to your body, these vaccines are strained through animal or human tissues like chicken embryos, monkey kidney tissue and embryonic guinea pig cells, to name a few. So what am I supposed to do if I don’t listen to my doctor and I decide not to get an annual flu shot? Well, you have probably made the smartest decision you have ever made in your entire life. So let me give you 5 Simple Secrets and Bonuses to Sailing Through The Flu Season: Secret #1: Reduce your intake of caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages and replace with purified water with addition of organic apple cider vinegar added. While it seems contrary to what we have been taught about colds and flu we know quite a few people who have tried it with great success. In 1928 Richard Simmons, M.D. hypothesized that colds and flu virus enter through the ear canal. His findings were dismissed by the medical community. According to Dr. Simmons, contrary to what you may think or have been taught about how you catch the flu or the cold there is only one way that you can catch the two, and that's via the ear canal not through the eyes or nose or mouth as most have believed. Keeping your fingers out of your ears will greatly reduce your chances of catching them, but then again these two are microscopic and can be air-born and may land on or even in your ear. Once they have entered the inner-ear (middle-ear) there they begin their breeding process, and from there they have access to every avenue throughout our body to travel to and to infect and make us sick. In 1938 German researchers had great success using hydrogen peroxide in dealing with colds and the flu. Their data has been ignored for over 60 years. It is important to begin treatment as soon as symptoms appear. If treatment is started promptly effectiveness seems to be in the 80% range. We have found remarkable results in curing the flu & cold within 12 to 14 hours when administering a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) into each infected ear, (sometimes only one ear is infected) The H2O2 starts working within 2 to 3 minutes in killing the flu or cold; there will be some bubbling and in some cases mild stinging occurs. Wait until the bubbling & stinging subside (usually 5 to 10 min) then drain onto tissue and repeat other ear. We have been exposed to a serious flu in our area, but have managed to dodge it. Here are some specifics: At the same time my 10 year old son who is rarely sick said he didn't feel well. I wasn't sure if he was saying that because he felt left out (the peroxide treatment aroused his interest), or if he really was coming down with something. So, I gave him a treatment, not seeing that any harm would come of it. He had strong bubbling on one side. He soon felt better and did not become ill. I came home from our local library book sale which was held in the basement. I quickly became ill, as if allergic to something in the basement, of which this was my first time down there.
