FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Maharishi University of Management Offers Introduction to Natural Medicine

Groundbreaking research in natural health care, organic cuisine, and information on prevention-based medicine--all this and more will be offered during a weekend open to the public at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, IA, April 27-30, 2001.

The University's College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine will be hosting a weekend-long introduction to the ancient system of natural medicine that has recently received coverage by Time magazine, Yoga Journal, CNN, and others.

"Natural health-care systems are gaining widespread popularity because they often deliver more effective results than conventional medicine, and without its harsh side-effects," said Robert Schneider, the College dean, who spoke at the White House Commission on Complimentary and Alternative Medicine Policy in December. Dr. Schneider said that 40 percent of the population in the U.S. uses natural medicine today.  "Maharishi Vedic Medicine is at the foreground of this field, because it is one of the most thoroughly researched systems of natural medicine."

Participants in the "Weekend of Discovery" will learn firsthand about the founding principles of Maharishi Vedic Medicine. Scheduled topics include mind/body medicine, pulse diagnosis, and prevention of disease through proper diet and routine. They'll also tour the University campus, talk with students who are studying Maharishi Vedic Medicine, and learn more about the academic programs offered in this discipline.

"We want people to know that there are academic degrees available in a holistic system with scientific backing," said Dr. Schneider, whose research on Maharishi Vedic Medicine has received more than $17 million in federal grant support. Dr. Schneider recently received a $7.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund research in natural medicine and prevention at the University's College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine.
